Fall into the Garden with the Delaware Master Gardeners

Date:  Saturday, October 16, 2021, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

Location:  Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens at the New Castle County Cooperative Extension Office, University of Delaware, 461 Wyoming Road, Newark, DE 19716

Join us for a morning of learning designed for both novice and experienced gardeners. Featuring a variety of topics, giveaways, and an opportunity to network with our expert Master Gardeners!

Master Gardeners will offer tours of our demonstration gardens throughout the morning.  Our Native Plant booklet which includes information about the native plants featured in our demonstration gardens will be available for sale for $5/ea (exact cash only).

This year’s Fall into the Garden program includes:

Native Trees and Perennials to Plant for Fall Color, with Master Gardener JW Wistermayer

Vibrant hues and dazzling colors are not just descriptions for spring flowers.  Join JW to take a look at native plants that will amaze you with their fall colors and impress you with their value in the home landscape in all seasons.

We’re Splitting Up, with Master Gardener Jane Adams

This session with Jane will provide a "hands-on" demonstration of splitting perennials.  We will divide perennials that are most suitable and easy to divide.  Learn how to dig up the plants, which tools to use, and how to separate and break the plant into parts that can be replanted in the garden.  This class will enable participants to divide perennials without fear.

Sheet Composting, with Master Gardener and Master Composter Gail Hermenau

Sheet composting is an ancient technique that has many practical applications today. Learn about this cold composting method as Gail provides a” hands-on” demonstration in the Vegetable and Demonstration Garden.  Sheet composting is an excellent way to convert an area for a new vegetable bed, create new or enlarge current perennial borders, improve soil and structure in existing beds, put your vegetable garden to bed for the season, suppress weeds, and recycle organic materials.

Registration is $15.  Important:  No refunds will be issued unless the program is canceled.  You will be notified in the event of cancellation.

This year’s program will be conducted outside in our gardens for up to 25 participants.  This will be a rain/shine event.  Participants will have access to the restrooms in our building.  Masks are required inside and masks are required in the gardens when 3’ distancing is not possible.

This program is brought to you by University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, a service of the UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, a land-grant institution, and the Delaware Libraries.
These institutions are equal opportunity providers. If you have special needs that need to be accommodated, please contact the office two weeks prior to the event.
