UD BY THE SEA  

UD by the Sea 2020 has been cancelled. Registrants will be refunded their full registration fees either by credits to their debit/credit cards or refund checks from the University of Delaware.

Room reservations at the Atlantic Sands will be automatically cancelled by the hotel, and full refunds will be issued. There is no need to contact the Atlantic Sands. If you do not receive a refund of your room deposit by April 15, please email Colleen Olexa.

UD by the Sea—A four-day OLLI event at Rehoboth Beach

May 19-22, 2020 (Tuesday through Friday)

Designed by and for members of UD’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), UD by the Sea provides OLLI members and guests with programming, activities and social time in Rehoboth Beach. Registration for UD by the Sea includes:

  • Attendance at two days of topical programs with guest speakers
  • A choice of five educational programming tracks
  • Opening Reception with entertainment and cash bar
  • Buffet Breakfast on Wednesday morning
  • Continental Breakfast on Friday morning
  • Games and social activities
  • Fun, new memories and friends

Attendees will participate in one of the following event tracks:

Track 1—Dela-Where?

Engaging speakers will present on a variety of subjects relating to Delaware’s culture, history, environment, government and other topics related to the state. How much to you know about Delaware’s fascinating history? Programming in this track will include: 

  • Bill Purdy, OLLI Dover instructor and Commander of the 2nd Regiment Delaware Volunteer Infantry; Delaware during the Civil War
  • Doug Poore, Curator, Greater Harrington Historical Society; The Railroads of Delmarva
  • Jim Duffy – Author and Co-founder, Secrets of the Eastern Shore; Strange & Wondrous! True-Life Tales from Delmarva & the Chesapeake
  • Judge Vivian L. Medinilla, Superior Court of the State of Delaware, and Paul R. Wallace, Superior Court of the State of Delaware

Track 2—The Arts

We’ll pull back the curtain on Delaware’s thriving art scene, with visits from respected experts in music, theater, dance, and fine arts. From production to programming and creativity to conservation, our speakers will share their stories, get your toes tapping and your minds engaged in all things ARTS!  Programming in this track will include the below. (Additional respected experts from local and statewide groups and organizations have been invited to participate as presenters, and the list will be updated as it is confirmed.)  

  • Brendan Cooke, General Director, OperaDelaware
  • Jon Newsom, OLLI Instructor and former Chief of the Music Division, Library of Congress

Track 3—U.S. Foreign Policy and Relations

Intrigue and intricacy abound in the realm of U.S. Foreign Policy & Relations. We’ll explore international affairs issues currently facing the U.S. via sessions led by experts with extensive and insightful experience in the U.S. foreign service, academia and the U.S. military. Programming in this track will include the below. (Additional respected experts from local and statewide groups and organizations have been invited to participate as presenters, and the list will be updated as it is confirmed.)  

  • Ralph Begleiter, Founding Director, UD Center for Political Communication and former CNN World Affairs Correspondent 
  • Nancy Powell, former U.S. Ambassador to India, Pakistan and Nepal, and Director General of the U.S. Foreign Service
  • Christopher Mark - former Senior China analyst at the CIA

Track 4—Horticulture: Gardens and Growers Track is full; only waiting list positions remain.

Experience some of Delaware’s finest horticultural gems and learn from gardeners and growers alike in this insightful, educational and nature-filled track. You’ll tour the two-acre meadow garden designed by renowned landscape designer Piet Oudolf at the newly opened Delaware Botanic Garden at Pepper Creek. You’ll learn about hydroponics and Lavender Fields, visit the Delaware Master Gardeners demonstration gardens and Sussex County’s largest nursery, and even view nature’s beautiful gardens via boat. (This off-site program, which will involve bus transportation and walks on trails and unpaved surfaces, will require moderate individual mobility. Come prepared rain or shine. Field trip transportation provided.) Programming in this track will include:

  • Delaware Botanic Gardens, the first and only botanic garden in Sussex County, featuring a 2-acre meadow and 16-acre woodlands walk
  • Delaware Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden at the UD Sussex County Extension Office tour
  • East Coast Garden Center and Lavender Fields tours
  • Cape Water Taxi Canal tour

Track 5—The First Town: Homes, Forts and Lighthouses Track is full; only waiting list positions remain.

Explore how Lewes and the people who settled there have impacted the history of the area and the United States from the 17th century to today through its residents, structures, political positions and industries. Our tour of this First Town in the First State will feature visits to historic homes, forts, a lighthouse, a lifesaving station and a lightship, highlighted by amazing views from the East End Lighthouse and the Fire Tower. (This off-site program, which will involve bus transportation, walks on trails and unpaved surfaces, and OPTIONAL stair climbing in the East End Lighthouse and the Observation “Fire Tower” at Fort Miles, will require moderate individual mobility. Come prepared rain or shine. Field trip transportation provided.)  Programming in this track will include:

  • Guided bus tour of Lewes, including a visit to the Lewes Historical Society Rollins Museum
  • Cannonball House and Overfalls Foundation
  • Cape Henlopen State Park with Guided Tour
  • Fort Miles Museum Tour
  • Cape Water Taxi tour

UD by the Sea is sponsored by OLLI in partnership with UD’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program.

Registration

Registration will be extended to active OLLI members and one guest, with members considered active if they registered for either Fall 2019 or Spring 2020 sessions in Kent County, Sussex County or Wilmington. Individual OLLI members may register for UD by the Sea for $125, and may register one guest for $150.

Public registration—In late February, remaining open seats will be made available to the public.

Accommodations

Participants are responsible for accommodations, with the option to make reservations directly with the Atlantic Sands Hotel, or other hotel arrangements if desired. Members and guests are strongly discouraged from booking hotel rooms before their program registration is confirmed.

  • Reservations at Atlantic Sands—Hotel room reservations may be made by calling 800-422-0600 no later than April 20, 2020.
  • UD by the Sea group rate—Participants should mention the UD by the Sea room block (booking #9730) to receive the group rate of $120 a night per room.
